Day 6 - Lake Monsters (November 1st, 2015)

Easing out of our Halloween week we will take a causal scenic drive to Achill Island on the west of Ireland after breakfast. Described in by Robert Lloyd Praeger in 1937 in his accounts:

'Achill, wind-swept and bare, heavily peat-covered, with great gaunt brown mountains rising here and there, and a wild coast hammered by the Atlantic waves on all sides but the east, has a strange charm which everyone feels, but none can fully explain.'

On our journey around Achill we will learn of the alleged stigmata and other 'miracles' being produced at the House of Prayer at Pollagh. Also back towards Achill Sound, near the bridge, we have Sraheens Lough. The Lough made front pages news in the Evening Herald of June 4th 1968, due to alleged lake monster sightings there. So cameras at the ready, reports at the time stated: 'A place so lonely and sterile and primeval that one might expect to see the *piast* or other Irish water-monster rising from the inky depths of the tarn.'

After dinner we will travel to the Hawks Well Theatre in Sligo for an evening show. The dress code is smart casual and be prepared for a great time. The theatre hosts a diverse programme of arts and entertainments including comedy, professional and amateur drama, a wide range of music from traditional and jazz to opera, plus dance and pantomime.
